● Handling Pressurized Vessels & Flammable Gases

● Verifying Power is Off & Lockout Tagout

● Applying First-aid, Fire Prevention & Breathing Conditions

● Working in Extreme Conditions & Hazard Avoidance

● Material Handling, Lifting & Crane Signals

● Use Hand, Power, Specialized Tools & Test Instruments

● Thread & Glue Piping, Secure & Insulate Tubing & Piping

● Install Line Sets, Leak Test Systems, Inject Dye & Repair Leaks,

● Evacuate Lineset & Equipment, Measure Microns on System

● Operate Service Valves, Chemically Clean Line Set

● Cleaning & Servicing Condensate Pipe, Inspect Drain System


500 Hours C. Refrigerant Recovery Process & Management

Brief Examples:

● Trace out the Ref. Cycle, Use PT Chart, Maintain Certifications

● Identify Refrigerants, Recover Ref. Systems or Cylinders

● Use Passive / Active Recovery Methods, Recycle Refrigerant

● Return Reclaimed Refrigerant, Maintain Refrigerant Records

● Monitor Date Stamps on DOT Cylinders, Label DOT Cylinders

● Access or Install Service Valves, Test Ref. for Acid or Moisture


1000 Hours D. Refrigeration Cycle Components & Charging

Brief Examples:

● Check System Charge w/Tables, Slide Rule & Digital Table

● Determine Metering Device Type, Record Readings

● Bypass Controls for Charging, Add Liquid & Vapor Ref.

● Legally Remove Ref. Vapor or Liquid, Weigh Ref. Cylinders

● Charge by Superheat or Subcooling, Use PT Charts,

● Warm a Ref. Cylinder, Determine Conditions & Unit Temp Range

● Install or Service Condensers, Metering Devices, Evaporators

● Install or Service Compressors, Accessories & Outdoor Units

● Measure Fins Per Inch, Straighten Coil Fins & Remove Deposits

● Adjust Water Regulating Valves & Service Cooling Towers

● Test Compression Ratio, Diagnose High Pressure Issues

● Check Heat Recovery Units, Perform System Start-up Procedures

● Service & Install Reversing Valve

● Inspect Pulley “V” Belt Tension, Alignment, & Mounting Hardware

● Replace Motor Drive Couplings, Blower Wheels & Fan Blades

● Reset Lockout / Impedance Circuits, Test Heat Pump Defrost Controls

● Test & Adjust Low Ambient Controls, Install / Service Electric Heat Strips

● Operate a Reversing Valve With a Magnet, Test & Replace a Capacitor


250 Hours F. Gas Heat Install, Service & Maintenance

Brief Examples:

● Install and Perform a Seasonal Maintenance on a Gas Furnace

● Diagnose Gas Furnace Issues, Install & Adjust Regulators, Purge Lines

● Identify Gas Type, Convert a Gas Furnace Fuel, Test Furnace Efficiency

● Adjust Combustion Mixture, Check Pilot or Spark Ignition

● Inspect Evidence of Flame Roll Out, Test for Leaky Heat Exchangers

● Check for Proper Fan Delay, Verify Safety Control Operation

● Inspect Flue Gas Venting for Leakage and Proper Installation

● Clean Heat Exchanger Drain Line, Check Fresh Air Intake

750 Hours G. Indoor Air Distribution System & Air Quality

Brief Examples:

● Inspect, Measure, Order & Replace Air Filters Types & Sizes

● Clean Air Ducts, Air Moving Equipment & Fresh Air Intakes

● Install or Service Exhaust Fans, Return Air Duct & Plenums

● Record Air Characteristics & Issues using Psychrometric Chart

● 4-Piece a Supply Air Plenum, Install Supply & Return Ducts

● Install & Adjust Registers, Return Grills & Filter Back Grills

● Use a Duct-U-Lator to Size a Duct Force Balance a Duct Comm.System

● Seal Air Distribution System Leaks, Install or Adjust a Damper

● Participate in the Blower Door Testing Process


250 Hours H. Heat Pumps, Troubleshooting & Energy Audit

Brief Examples:

● Determine System Efficiency Ratings, Voltage & Circuit Breaker Size

● Evaluate Blower Door & InfraRed Data & Inspect for Air Leakage

● Test Heat Pump System Output & Coefficient of Performance

● Service or Replace Reversing Valve & Heat Pump Accessories

● Adjust a TXV & Replace Flow Check Orifice to Match Conditions

● Troubleshoot Efficiency Issues with Heat Pumps & Air Ducts

● Perform a Home Energy Audit, Diagnose Consumption Issues

● Apply Mechanical Codes & Participate in the Inspection Process
